MedStar Union Memorial Hospital has provided safe, high-quality, compassionate care to its community for more than 170 years. Located in northeast Baltimore City, MedStar Union Memorial is a regional specialty and teaching hospital. It is known for The Curtis National Hand Center, MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute, MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, and the development of the first hospital-based sports medicine program in the country.

MedStar Union Memorial has dedicated specialty centers for hip and knee, spine, foot and ankle, and sports medicine. It also has advanced certification in Palliative Care and is designated as a Primary Stroke Center. The Curtis National Hand Center is designated as the Hand and Upper Extremity Trauma Center for the state of Maryland by the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Systems. Other specialties include primary care, emergency medicine, outpatient behavioral health, general medical and surgical services, diagnostic imaging, and lab services.

Nationally renowned hand center

The Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital is one of the world’s largest and most experienced hand centers. The 23,000 square feet Curtis National Hand Center is designated as the Hand and Upper Extremity Trauma Center for Maryland by the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Systems, is the only MIEMSS Specialty Referral Center for Hand and Upper Extremity Trauma in the United States, has earned CARF accreditation, was designated as the first and only National Hand Center by Congress in 1994, and features one of the nation's largest outpatient hand therapy programs.

For decades, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital has served as a regional hub for heart and vascular care. MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute features cardiology and diagnostics, cardiac surgery, complex vascular surgery, advanced heart failure, structural heart and valve disease, cardiac catheterization with transradial access, and cardiac electrophysiology

Orthopaedics trusted by patients and athletes alike

We offer a wide array of non-invasive treatments as well as surgical options to our patients and have 10,000 square feet of research laboratories dedicated to musculoskeletal innovation and surgical skills training. Our physicians are highly rated and exceed national surgical quality benchmarks. We are also the first hospital-based sports medicine program on the East Coast.

Specialized residency and fellowship programs

We have residency training programs in internal medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics and pharmacy. We also offer fellowship programs in hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, shoulder and elbow, sports medicine, and endocrinology.
