Founded in 1963, MedStar Health Research Institute is the research division of MedStar Health. The institute provides scientific, administrative, and regulatory support for clinical research throughout the MedStar Health system.

With approximately 60% of its studies being federally funded, MedStar Health Research Institute is in the top 20% of U.S. institutions receiving funds from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. In the last year, more than1,000 active studies, involving thousands of patients, resulted in nearly 1,000 peer-reviewed publications.

Our research networks and core services

MedStar Health Research Institute researchers have many specialties and conduct investigations across six comprehensive networks, including the MedStar Health Cardiovascular Research Network, MedStar Healthcare Delivery Research Network, and MedStar Georgetown Cancer Research Networks. Our many core assets include a biostatistics and epidemiological center, clinical research centers, a research pharmacy, two accredited pre-clinical laboratories, biochemistry and biomarker core laboratories, a core platelet center, a cardiac and vascular pathology center,  a genetics/genomics/proteomics research core, a cardiovascular core imaging center, an institutional review board, and an office of research integrity.

Cancer network

The MedStar Georgetown Cancer Research Network treats both early and advanced disease, assuring that every patient with cancer has access to the best therapies. All of our cancer care is research-driven and research-inspired. Clinicians conduct a variety of trials ranging from treatment to supportive care for symptom management. Research topics include brain cancer, breast cancer, digestive/gastrointestinal cancer, endocrine/thyroid cancer, gynecological cancer, head and neck cancer, hematologic cancer, melanoma, sarcoma, and thoracic cancer.

Healthcare delivery network

Every day, MedStar Health Research Institute investigators are studying and implementing new ways to improve the delivery of health care. Our health care delivery research program continues to expand and now serves as a national network for health researchers and policymakers to help set national priorities and recommend standards of care. Research topics include access to care and utilization, care delivery models, health care equity and health care disparities, palliative care, and quality and safety.

Cardiovascular network

The MedStar Cardiovascular Research Network utilizes MedStar Heath’s patient experience data, which includes more than 18,000 catheterizations, 5,000 percutaneous interventional procedures, and 1,800 open-heart procedures per year. Research topics include acute coronary syndrome, angiogenesis / myogenesis, atherosclerosis and lipids therapy, cardiac imaging, carotid stent trials, congestive heart failure, drug eluting stent registries, gene discovery, peripheral vascular disease device studies, and pharmacologic therapies for cardiovascular disease.
